The University of South Africa (Unisa) has decided to provide WAFCON champions, Banyana Banyana with bursary opportunities so they can continue to advance their careers into a better future.
The higher learning institution further stated that they will provide the 23 players, by the university's admissions standards, with a special bursary programme (learning possibilities) as a token of appreciation for their historic performance.
The offer will be made available to recipients after January 2023, and its terms and conditions will be disclosed to them.
The historic victory of South Africa in the African football scene after twenty-six years is very inspirational to Unisa, the youth, and South Africa as a whole. The achievement of Banyana resonates with Unisa’s values of innovation, excellence, and responsiveness.
The institution went on to state that it is because of this that they felt it was appropriate to provide the nation's exemplary champions with the chance to advance their studies.
Unisa's vice-chancellor and principal, Prof. Lenka Bula, stated that she hopes Unisa’s gesture will inspire the young men and women to believe in sport, attributes of discipline and greatness and that there are long-term benefits and rewards connected with such values.
“We hope that this simple act would encourage young girls and boys to believe in sport, qualities of discipline and excellence and that there are long-term advantages and rewards associated with such characteristics, in the same way, that Banyana have inspired the nation,” she added
The South African Football Association leadership and the general public will be informed of the ceremonial handover ceremony's specifics by Unisa during the coming days.
