The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has strongly condemned the circulation of false information claiming that public schools will not reopen as scheduled on Monday, 13 October 2025.
In a statement released on Saturday, the department clarified that there are no changes to the official school calendar. “The Department of Basic Education notes with concern the circulation of fake news on social media and other unofficial platforms suggesting changes to the reopening dates of schools for the fourth term. The department wishes to clarify unequivocally that these messages are false and misleading.
“All public schools across South Africa will reopen as scheduled on Monday, 13 October 2025, marking the beginning of the fourth and final academic term of the school calendar,” the DBE confirmed.
The department criticised those spreading misinformation, warning that such actions cause unnecessary panic and confusion for parents, learners, and educators.
Minister of Basic Education Siviwe Gwarube urged the public to be responsible when sharing information. “Education is a shared national responsibility. False information disrupts schools, confuses parents, and undermines the hard work of our teachers and learners. We appeal to every South African to be vigilant, to verify before sharing, and to help us protect the academic calendar and the upcoming National Senior Certificate examinations,” said Gwarube.
The DBE encouraged parents and learners to rely only on official communication channels such as the department’s website (www.education.gov.za), verified social media accounts, and provincial education departments for accurate updates.
Final Stretch Before Matric Exams
As the academic year nears its end, the department expressed appreciation to teachers, learners, parents, and school management teams for their continued resilience and dedication. With the 2025 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations set to begin on 21 October 2025, the DBE called on the Matric Class of 2025 to remain focused and make full use of available support, including study materials, radio lessons, and revision programmes.
The department reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a smooth conclusion to the school year. It stated that all systems are in place — from infrastructure and learning materials to psychosocial support and teacher readiness — to ensure that teaching and learning resume seamlessly when schools reopen on Monday, 13 October 2025.
