Teachers have complained about the behavior of some learners at school, as there have been numerous incidents of violence, intimidation and insults leading to the school community being in fear.
In an interview CEO of the South African Teachers’ Union, Chris Klopper said:
We need to focus on those rotten apples in the basket instead of just saying that everyone is like that.
According to the union’s research, it has been revealed that teachers are getting pressure from learners who are not disciplined, and parents not acknowledging their children aren’t up to scratch when it comes to curriculum recovery and homework.
An Eastern Cape SGB vice chairperson said 15 to 25 parents are stepping in various scenarios to help combat the issues that some schools are grappling with.
“I believe parents should communicate with their children and be involved in school activities to better monitor their progress as trouble arises when there's a lack of basic discipline at home and at school,” said Charles Molema.🌍
Klopper also hinted that the pressure on teachers may be the reason why the Education Department is faced with large-scale resignations.
According to the Learner Discipline and School Management, the school management team has the duty to implement the general code of conduct for learners and school ethics.
This is one of many role players in the school community that has a role in instilling discipline, as a discipline does not fall squarely on the teacher-and-learner interaction in the classroom.
Schools have their own code of conduct, and Klopper has emphasized that it all starts with it being effectively implemented, which will consequently result in a better environment in classrooms.
