It has been reported that a group of Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students has been evicted from a downtown lodge in Polokwane.
The students then slept at the entrance of the university, pleading that the university helps them as they have nowhere else to go.
It has been reported that an agreement between the lodge and the university fell through to accommodate the students beyond the three-month period.
In an interview, a frustrated student, Rhulani Muhlari shared:
We were told that the officials of TUT said they are no longer going to turn that place into a Res.
Muhlari added that they had a meeting with the owner of the lodge, asking that it accommodates them for at least two days while they sort themselves out.
The students have also shared their experiences of being pelted by rain as they covered themselves with wet blankets.
According to TUT spokesperson Phaphama Tshisikhawe, there is a crisis impacting universities all over South Africa, and the university is taking the matter raised by the students seriously.
The university has also confirmed that it is fully aware of the situation and the students will be provided with accommodation with immediate effect.
