SASSA has announced that payments will continue after they were suspended due to the unrest. They will also be using their remaining budget in the Social Relief of Distress programme so that they can provide support in the form of food parcels, cash and food vouchers.

SASSA released a statement saying that services will resume at cash paypoints for SASSA grants in Gauteng. They were previously suspended due to the unrest we currently see happening in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal.

The agency continued to say:

The situation is now relatively under control and new payment dates have been circulated to affected beneficiaries especially in rural areas.

"Gauteng and the Western Cape have already received this service at their cash paypoints," SASSA said.

SASSA has also made the decision to use their remaining budget in the Social Relief of Distress programme which would see them provide support in the form of food parcels, cash and food vouchers.

The DA has however said that they will carefully monitor the use and distribution of these funds due to the "ANC government’s notorious mismanagement of resources during times of crises" and that they will do all it takes to ensure the proper management of these new relief measures.

SASSA is now making it clear that you cannot apply for social relief of distress food vouchers online after a fake message circulated on social media. It said that applications can be made by calling or emailing in SASSA when really you can only apply at a SASSA office.

SASSA is working on a platform which would allow citizens to apply for the food vouchers.

SASSA's food relief programme which sees beneficiaries receive vouchers to buy food was disrupted due to the recent unrests but has now been restarted. The agency now provides vouchers instead of food parcels.

The vouchers can then be used at selected merchants to buy exactly what you need. However, some of these stores were looted and vandalised in the past week.
