Students were exposed to online learning most of the time and universities met the students halfway by providing data and laptops for NSFAS students to make learning easier in the new normal.
Later in the 2021 academic year, universities announced that they would adopt a mandatory vaccine policy.
Some universities currently require students and staff to be vaccinated if they want to campus and access face-to-face classes.
When accessing university facilities, students ought to produce proof of vaccination or a document stating that the student is exempted from being vaccinated on the basis of religion, opinion, or belief.
In a Newzroom Africa live interview the Acting deputy director-general for University Education at the Department of Higher Education and Training Dr. Thandi Lewin said:
There's a big discussion around whether or not all students would be able to return to face-to-face classes and teaching.
Higher Education has confirmed that it is going to move towards more and more people being vaccinated. It has been reported that figures show that above 60% of the student population is vaccinated has so far been vaccinated.
