The KwaZulu-Natal Education Department has lost a teacher and a number of learners due to the bad weather conditions that have engulfed the province.
In an interview, the province's education department’s spokesperson Sihle Mlotshwa shared:
In the Pinetown district, five learners died because of this weather, they are reported to have drowned. In the uMzinyathi District, two learners also passed away.
It has been reported that an educator at one of the schools in the Ugu District has lost their life.
The department will continue to gather information on the number of people that have lost their lives due to the ongoing floods.
The department has called on parents to disallow their children from going outside.
KZN Premier Sihle Zikalala has praised locals and businesses that helped in the rescue of children who were trapped at a school in Molweni.
“We are talking to various provinces to see what assistance they can give in the immediate," shared Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.
Zikalala said the province will also need to first be classified and declared as a disaster area before receiving interventionary assistance.
This assistance will include accommodation, food and clothes among other things. Zikalala has confirmed these needs have been provided to people through Disaster Management.
