The University of South Africa (Unisa) has confirmed that it received a call from an anonymous caller last week who alleged that there was a bomb at one of its administrative buildings at the university’s Muckleneuck Campus.
In a statement from Unisa, it said that they then proceeded to evacuate staff, students and other stakeholders from the building and the campus, after which, they reported the incident to the South African Police Service (SAPS) who immediately dispatched a unit to the campus.
SAPS conducted a thorough sweep of the building and informed the university that no bomb was found in the building and that it is safe for staff and students as well as stakeholders to return to the campus and resume their usual activities.
Unisa has also confirmed that they have opened a case with the police, who are now conducting an investigation into the bomb threat.
In a statement released this past Sunday, relating to the incident, the university also said that necessary measures have been put in place to ensure the safety of all stakeholders on our campuses.
"Following further consultation and feedback from law enforcement authorities, the university reaffirms that it is indeed safe for staff, students and other stakeholders to return to the campus and resume their respective duties and businesses," read the statement.
