The Department of Basic Education (DBE) is continuing its implementation of the Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI) under the Presidential Youth Employment Initiative (PYEI).

Phase 5 of the BEEI programme provides employment opportunities to youth aged 18–34, not turning 35 before the end of March 2026. The initiative is aimed at supporting teaching and learning in schools across the country.

Teaching Assistant Jobs That Don't Require Matric

While some positions under the BEEI require applicants to have passed Grade 12, there are roles that offer opportunities to youth without Matric qualifications.

  • Handypersons: Matric is not required for this role. Applicants simply need to demonstrate an interest in infrastructure-related tasks such as maintenance, basic repairs, and general upkeep. A trade certificate is an added advantage, but not a requirement.

  • Sports and Enrichment Assistants (SEA): These positions do not require Matric. Applicants must show enthusiasm for sports, arts, or cultural activities. Having a certificate in a relevant field (such as coaching or music) is an advantage but not mandatory.

These roles provide a chance for young people without formal qualifications to gain work experience, contribute to their communities, and develop practical skills in a school setting.

The teaching assistant programme has already created over one million work opportunities in previous phases. Phase 5 will offer more than 200,000 new jobs.

Applications for Phase 5 teaching assistant jobs close on 9 May 2025. Eligible youth are encouraged to apply as soon as possible before the deadline.
