Thousands of South African youth benefitted from the Presidential Employment Stimulus (PES) since its introduction in 2020.

According to data released for PES in March 2021, 700 000 job opportunities were “supported”, and 422 786 actual jobs were created.

The Northern Cape Provincial Education Department gave a detailed breakdown of the categories of assistants allocated to the department as well as the categories allocated per district.

It has been reported that both Education and General Assistants were appointed in various categories.

Since the department was experiencing shortages of support staff at its schools and hostels, it then opted for increased capacity to close the gaps through this government initiative.

To ensure that there is clarity on the recruitment and appointment processes, the Northern Cape Provincial Education Department sent letters to all schools.

In a statement, the department explained:

Each participant was issued with a contract and a job description outlining their roles and responsibilities and conditions of service.

According to the Education Department, both District and Provincial teams conducted monthly monitoring inspections to check that the Programme was being implemented properly.
