The Department of Basic Education (DBE) has confirmed that applications for "Phase 7" of the Teaching Assistant Programme are not open. This announcement was made to address false information circulating online, which claimed that the department was accepting applications for Phase 7 teaching assistant jobs.

DBE Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga warned the public against falling for this misinformation. He clarified that the department has not initiated a new phase of the programme.

Please beware of fake information. The truth is that there are no new developments regarding the Teacher Assistants Programme.

He urged the public to disregard any claims about a new phase, labelling such statements as disinformation.

Anything else is false, fake, and fraudulent!

Overview of the Teaching Assistant Programme

The Basic Education Employment Initiative (BEEI), a DBE-led programme, was designed to tackle youth unemployment while providing much-needed support to the education sector. Since its launch, the initiative has created over one million job opportunities for young people across South Africa, primarily in roles such as education assistants and general school assistants.

These roles include positions like Curriculum Assistants, Reading Champions, E-Cadres, Care and Support Assistants, and other supportive functions within schools. Participants receive a monthly stipend aligned with South Africa’s minimum wage.

The programme’s primary goal is to address the high youth unemployment rate—currently around 63.9% for individuals aged 15 to 24—by offering young people both job opportunities and practical work experience. To further enhance employability, the DBE incorporates training initiatives into the programme, equipping participants with a mix of soft and hard skills.

While the BEEI has had a significant positive impact, providing essential work experience for young people and bolstering South Africa's overstretched education system, its future remains uncertain due to budgetary constraints.
