The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) began accepting applications for 2025 funding on 21 September, with the deadline set for 15 December. By the closing date, NSFAS revealed that they received 890 599 bursary applications and 17 369 loan applications.
However, many of these applications are missing documents which NSFAS Spokesperson, Ishmael Mnisi, says is a very important part of your NSFAS online application. Mnisi revealed that the most common document students aren't submitting is the declaration form.
These are critical documents that will enable NSFAS to make funding decisions and conclude the applications before the end of this year.
"We have made funding decisions for almost 600 000 students so far," said Mnisi. Sassa beneficiaries receive immediate funding decisions.
Of the 600 000 students, around 120 000 students need to submit documents to complete their applications.
Students who have outstanding documents have 30 days from receiving a notice, to submit them. Applicants who fail to submit their outstanding documents will have their NSFAS application cancelled.
It's important for students to remember that they will only receive feedback on their application outcome once all necessary documents and verifications have been concluded. Checking your NSFAS status regularly is also advised.

To access your NSFAS application status on myNSFAS,
Step 1: Login on the myNSFAS student portal. This will be your main NSFAS login point on the NSFAS website.
Step 2: Enter your username and password on the NSFAS official website and then click SIGN IN!
Step 3: Click on Track Your Funding Progress to check the NSFAS application status.
If you were rejected by NSFAS, you can submit a NSFAS appeal. This is your way of requesting NSFAS to reconsider your application based on the reasons you give them in the appeal.
