South Africans have collectively been subjected to more than 2000 hours of loadshedding so far this year and while the severity of the power cuts has reduced, the threat of darkness looms. This threat could be especially damaging for students participating in online examinations.

The University of South Africa (Unisa) has noted the increase in the frequency of loadshedding by Eskom. The rolling blackouts have affected everybody in the country, however, they could also impact the ability of students to perform during their upcoming end-of-year exams.

Unisa has called on students to prepare for the possibility of loadshedding during their upcoming exams. Students were advised to charge their devices and make provision for the use of alternative venues during the exams against their loadshedding schedule.

The University added that undergraduate students who are unable to complete their examinations will automatically be given a second opportunity to participate in an examination.

They said, “Undergraduate students using their first examination opportunity in the October/November 2022 examinations and are affected by poor network connectivity and are unable to complete their examinations will be granted an automatic second opportunity to write in the next official examination sitting of the affected module.”

Postgraduate students who are unable to complete their examinations due to connectivity challenges and/or loadshedding are advised to apply for an aegrotat. Postgraduate students who are completing their first opportunity to complete an examination and encounter the death or illness of a loved one must also apply for an aegrotat.

Here’s How To Apply For A Unisa Examination Aegrotat

Step 1: Log in to myUnisa and go to myAdmin.

Step 2: Select the examination timetable on the Assessment Admin.

Step 3: Click on “Display: to view your Oct/Nov timetable.

Step 4: Click on “Apply for Aegrotat Examination” and enter the details required

Step 5: Provide supporting documents to support your Aegrotat application. An affidavit is acceptable.

Postgraduate students have 10 days from the date of the examination in question to apply for an aegrotat.

Unisa added that postgraduate students who experienced irrecoverable incidents during their first examination opportunity MCQ assessment may apply for an aegrotat via email at aegrotats@unisa.ac.za.

“In accordance with policy, Unisa does not grant third examination opportunities to students to rewrite their missed examinations” warned the university.

Unisa modules with a portfolio or evidence-based assessments, continuous assessments, practical assessments, experiential assessment or require research reports, do not have a second examination opportunity.
