The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme has successfully allocated its entire budget of R1.265 billion for the 2024/25 financial year, despite facing two budget cuts that impacted its operations.
According to recent financial reports presented in parliament, the programme spent 100% of its allocated budget. This ensured that thousands of aspiring teachers could pay for their studies.
Exceeding the Target Despite Challenges
Despite financial constraints brought about by two budget cuts, the second of which was significant, Funza Lushaka managed to exceed its revised target.
By the end of December 2023, a preliminary list of 9,872 awarded bursaries was recorded. This means that despite budget cuts, the scheme surpassed its target of providing 9,700 bursaries.
The bursary programme, which is aimed at addressing South Africa’s critical teacher shortages, continues to play a crucial role in funding students pursuing education degrees in key subjects.
Placement of Teachers
One unique feature of the Funza Lushaka Bursary is its post-graduation work obligation. You do not have to pay back any money for the Funza Lushaka Bursary.
However, recipients are required to teach in public schools for the same number of years they have been funded. For instance, if a student benefits from the bursary for four years while studying, they are expected to serve four years in a public school after qualifying.
At the end of the financial year, more than 3,480 students were supplied to Provincial Education Departments. 1,825 graduates were placed in schools around the country, representing a placement rate of 53.17%.
