The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) recently opened applications for the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant for April 2025. However, only certain individuals must submit an SRD grant application for payments in 2025.

Sassa clarified that beneficiaries of the SRD grant do not need to reapply for the R370 grant every month.

According to Sassa, individuals who submitted valid applications in previous months are automatically considered for the following months' SRD grant payments.

Beneficiaries do not need to submit new applications each month.

Sassa warned SRD grant applicants against submitting duplicate applications as they could result in payment delays.

Who Qualifies for SRD Grant Payments?

To qualify for the SRD grant, applicants must meet specific eligibility criteria. They must be South African citizens, residents, or special permit holders, and must not receive other forms of government support, such as UIF benefits or NSFAS bursaries.

In addition, applicants' bank balances must be less than R624 to qualify for the R370 grant.

Sassa collaborates with the Department of Home Affairs to verify identity and citizenship status and works with the Department of Treasury to confirm income levels using bank details. Once eligibility is verified, Sassa processes payments monthly, typically at the end of the month.

Who Can Apply For April 2025 SRD Grant Payments

Individuals who have not benefited from the SRD grant in recent months can submit an SRD grant application in April. This includes individuals who previously received the grant but cancelled their SRD grant application.
