For decades matric learners have found out whether they have passed their final exams but waiting up late at night to look for their name in newspapers. In recent years this has changed slightly
With more concern in modern times for the privacy of personal information, this changed a few years ago with the students' exam numbers being published instead of names and surnames. This wasn't enough for the Information Regulator (IR), the official body for protecting personal information and privacy.
The IR instructed the Basic Education Department to stop the practice of publishing results in newspapers - and also imposed a R5million.
Matric Results 2024
Now the North Gauteng High Court has thrown out the Information Regulator's case and ruled that the results can be published in newspapers with exam numbers. Judge Ronel Tolmay declared that the case was not urgent as matric results are released each year at this time.
Matric candidates will then be able to find out if they have passed by reviewing the newspaper and checking under their exam numbers. To receive full results, including subject marks, students will need to visit the school/exam centre or search for your results online.
