The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) is set to fund more than one million students during the 2024 academic year. Hundreds of thousands of students applied for comprehensive funding for the first time in 2024.

The government bursary scheme received almost 1.9 million applications for funding during the 2024 NSFAS application period.

NSFAS funding includes the money for tuition and registration fees. They also include several NSFAS allowances for students that aim to cover the costs students will incur during their quest to obtain a tertiary education qualification.

Whether a student has applied for a NSFAS bursary or a NSFAS missing middle student loan, they will need to complete a NSFAS login to check their NSFAS status. By checking their NSFAS status, they will know if they have been approved for funding.

NSFAS is calling on all 2024 NSFAS applicants to check their NSFAS status after updating their funding list. The funding list informs individuals whether or not they have been approved for NSFAS funding.

We strongly encourage all applicants to check their application status on the myNSFAS portal. NSFAS has recently updated its list of provisionally funded applicants due to a significant increase in funding.

It's important to note that students who appear on the funding list are only provisionally funded. This means that while they meet all the eligibility criteria for NSFAS funding, they will only begin benefitting from NSFAS funding and allowances once their registration has been confirmed by their University or Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college

NSFAS Appeals Now Open

NSFAS has opened the 2024 NSFAS appeals application period. Thousands of applicants who were rejected by NSFAS are allowed to appeal this decision.

If applicants have their NSFAS application rejected, they would then have 30 days to submit a NSFAS appeal. This NSFAS appeal will see the financial aid scheme re-evaluate the NSFAS application which could lead to a rejection becoming an approval.

How To Submit A NSFAS Appeal

  1. Click here to visit the myNSFAS website.
  2. Log into your myNSFAS account.
  3. Click the ‘Track Funding Progress’ option.
  4. Check the application progress tabs.
  5. If your application status reflects an unsuccessful message, you may submit an appeal by clicking on the ‘Submit Appeal Tab’.
  6. Once you are on the ‘Application Appeal’ page, you can see the reason for your unsuccessful application status.
  7. You are then able to choose the appeal reason.
  8. Upload certified supporting documents to support your reason.
  9. Click ‘Submit Appeal’.

It is therefore vital that applicants check their NSFAS status as they will only have 30 days to submit their appeal. If they check their application status 30 days after NSFAS provided them with their decision, they may not be able to submit a NSFAS appeal.
