Every year, thousands of admission applications are considered by institutions of higher learning. One South African university has reminded students that simply applying does not guarantee admission to study at the institution.

Last week, a popular news publication published an article that detailed how prospective students struggle to register at the University of South Africa. The prospective students in the article also alleged that they struggle to get support from the institution's administration.

Unisa noted the article and refuted claims that the struggles experienced by the students suggest the existence of a pervasive problem. They labelled the claims against them as unfounded and uninformed.

The university revealed that they receive around one million applications every semester. However, due to limitations, they are unable to provide placement for all these students.

The intrusion will only be able to accommodate 376,000 students for the 2023 academic year after receiving 958,517 applications for the semester.

A ranking system is used by Unisa to determine which applicants will be granted admission and provided with placement offers. Students will only be able to register if they are offered placement.

“Only the students who have been given offers are eligible to register and, where a student declines or fails to take up the offer within a specified period, it is then available to the next qualifying students” explained Unisa.

The university added that 50 consultants are currently employed in the Student Communication and Support Centre (SCSC) to assist students with administration challenges.

They add that these consultants respond to calls, emails, web chats and social media direct messages. Students can contact the SCSC at 0800 001 870.

“Where students are not satisfied with the service they are getting from the floor staff, they should report this to the regional centre managers in charge of the respective regional service centres,” added Unisa.

Students who complete their Unisa registration can access their course material on the myUnisa platform. Students are also encouraged to activate their myLife email accounts. This is because the university communicates exclusively with students on these platforms.
