The Department's Second Chance programme aims to provide support to learners who have not been able to meet the requirements of the National Senior Certificate or the extended Senior Certificate.

Learners with special needs have now have the opportunity to make use of a second chance to retake their matric exam.

The Second Chance programme was launched in 2016 and supports anyone of any age who wants to achieve or improve a matric qualification subject by subject as well as on a part-time basis.

Throughout the country, the DBE has made face-to-face classes available at selected locations to help those who require help with understanding the learning material.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the Second Chance Programme website or district office if they have any questions about the programme.

The Philadelphia secondary school for learners with special educational needs hosted a study-camp for a group of blind candidates in preparation for the upcoming National Senior Certificate examinations. Those who participated say this is a step in the right direction for people living with disabilities.

“I am here to coordinate the program. It has been a long journey ever since we started with this programme, I did all the recruitment in Gauteng.”  stated the programme’s Coordinator Micheal Baloyi.

Baloyi adds that he has been working closely with the Department of Basic Education (DBE) to start the program to start as well as the centre.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the Second Chance Programme website or district office if they have any questions about the programme.
