Attaining a Matric certificate is an important part of a learner's educational journey in that it grants them the opportunity to pursue the career they have always wanted. This is partly why failure to achieve this goal can have a devastating impact on a learner’s will to try and do it again.
Fortunately for them, the Department of Basic Education has introduced the Second Chance Programme. Formally introduced in 2016, the program enables matriculants who would like to redo their matric because they had either failed or attained poor results and would like to improve them.
Although the programme has no age restrictions, the most targeted group contains those aged 21 and above, with a minimum qualification of Grade 9, 10 and 11 as well as those who are in ABET level 4.
When applying through the district office, applicants are advised to carry the following documents:
- Identity Document
- Statement of results or matric certificate
- School reports are required for those who left school before matric

Upon joining the programme, learners will have access to learning materials and study tools. Classes will be available to watch on SABC 3, DStv and Openview (Channel 122), where the programme airs 2 days a week. On Mondays and Thursdays, it airs from 23:00 until 00:00. During weekends, it's airs from 6:00 until 10:00.
For those doing the Second Chance Matric Programme, revision programmes will air seven days a week, from 4:00 - 5:00 and 22:00 - 23:00. If you happen to miss it, it will also be available for free on the DStv Now Catch up the app.
