Safety Tips for SASSA Beneficiaries During Payouts

The South African Police Service (SAPS) has urged all South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant beneficiaries to remain vigilant during payout periods. Criminals often take advantage of these times, and it is important for recipients to prioritise their personal safety and protect their money.

Important Safety Tips for SASSA Beneficiaries:

- Keep your personal and payment information private at all times.
- Protect your SASSA card and PIN – never share them with anyone.
- Be cautious of strangers loitering near ATMs.
- Know your official payment dates. To avoid crowds, consider collecting your grant a few days after the scheduled payout date.
- Do not respond to unsolicited calls or messages requesting personal details or card information.
- Stay alert and aware of your surroundings before and after withdrawing money.
- Avoid using ATMs with blank screens or those in poorly lit, isolated areas.
- Where possible, collect your cash with a trusted friend or family member.
- Be suspicious of strangers offering help or telling you there is a problem with the ATM.
- Remember, security personnel at ATMs are there to monitor criminal activity – they are not authorised to help with your transaction.

SAPS has encouraged beneficiaries to report any suspicious activity or criminal incidents. Reports can be made by calling Crime Stop on 08600 10111, the SASSA grant and fraud hotline on 0800 601 011, or through the MySAPS App.

By following these safety tips, SASSA beneficiaries can reduce their risk of falling victim to crime and ensure that they access their grants safely and securely.
