It's nice to have some extra money around, whether to help pay for things at home or to use to treat yourself. Once you turn 16, you are legally allowed to begin working, so let's look at why getting a part-time job is a good idea.

The Basic Conditions of Employment Act prohibits the employment of children under the age of 15, but once you turn 16 you can start looking at getting a job.

The jobs available to teenagers are limited, though. Work defined as hazardous or inappropriate for minors require you to be 18 or older, and there are limits on how many hours a teenager still in school can work. But that doesn't mean you shouldn't bother!

Why should I get a part-time job?

  • Earn some money
  • Learn financial responsibility
  • Develop skills and work history for your CV

So what kind of jobs are available to you? Let's take a look.

  • Restaurant waitron
  • Babysitting
  • Retail work
  • Brand ambassador work
  • Photographer
  • Online work
    • Freelance writing
    • Social media marketing
    • Video editing
    • Picture editing

These are just a few jobs that you might want to consider. You could pick up a few shifts at your local restaurant and learn to multitask. Or perhaps you'd prefer to work as a cashier in your favourite clothing store. Whatever you decide to do, it can be a great opportunity to learn and earn some money!

How do I apply for a job?

So you've decided to go for it and apply for a job! What next?

  • Prepare a simple CV
  • Drop it off at the place you're interested in
  • Wait and see
