Rego Senne’s journey to becoming a student at WeThinkCode_ reflects a young man with a wide range of interests and talents and with plenty of determination to back it up.  At school, Grenville High in Rustenburg North West, his favourite subjects were visual arts, English – where his favourite poets were Maya Angelo and EE Cummings – and IT. He also dabbled in drama and chess.

Information technology and physics were at the top of his list of post-school study areas. Not happy to wait around, in Grade 11 he announced that he wanted to leave school to study IT. Not surprisingly his mother was totally against that idea.

Then his dream of studying IT received another blow when a senior student told him that “Information technology will be too hard for you. It will smack you around.”

His response? “Challenge accepted!”

Eager to get going, he looked for places where matric was not a prerequisite to study IT and discovered WeThinkCode_.

I did the WTC entrance exam but wasn’t accepted. So I moved on, completed my matric at Grenville High and then a course in graphic design at Boston College.

He was voted the best graphic design student at Boston, but realised that it was not a long term option. “I realised then that graphic design was not for me because there is not enough freedom. It’s simply too limiting,” he explains.

The IT dream lingered and, while at Boston, he applied to WTC again and was accepted to do the bootcamp. “The bootcamp was intimidating and I even considered quitting, but I told myself that, because I was already there, I may as well complete it. And as they say, the rest is history.”

He continues, “I started with coding languages Scratch and Delphi7, which was a monster. But I absolutely love coding.  It’s like moulding my own little baby. Nothing can describe the sense of achievement I get from my coding projects.”

His family still lives in Rustenburg. “Mom is a pharmacy assistant but I don’t see her often. I’m just too busy with my studies.”

What about the future?

I would love to get into the area of cyber security where I can penetrate and test code, which is called ethical hacking. Basically, I love the challenge of keeping up with evolving technology.

Based on Rego’s remarkable career, characterised by dogged determination and plenty of skill, all those cyber criminals out there need to be extra-careful.
