The popular singing competition, Idols South Africa is sadly coming to an end due to being canceled by M-Net. The reality television show will, however, still crown its season 19 winner in 2023, with auditions set to take place from 12 February.

News of the show’s cancelation surfaced on Sunday evening when it was announced that season 19 will be the last edition. "It's time to say goodbye. Eighteen unforgettable seasons. The history of creating stars and an army of fans. Will you be the last South African Idol? The farewell season of South African Idols, your last chance to live your dream," Idols SA posted on social media.

It took some fans of the show a moment to comprehend that this would be the last year that they would be watching those laughable wooden mic auditions.

However other fans said it was about time the show got canceled and give way to fresh shows. The views for the popular singing competition dropped this last season as fans complained about the changes that had taken place. Judges Unathi Nkayi and Randall were fired from the show and replaced with music producer JR Bogopa and Thembi Seete.

In an interview with News24, Nomsa Philiso, MultiChoice CEO for general entertainment said that the changes in judges for the 18th season were partly done to get the ratings back and also to attract new audiences.

Part of us refreshing the judges is also us trying to say that we're going to give you guys a much bigger and better Idols.

Following the conclusion of Idols' 18th season, Shirley Adonisi, M-Net director of local entertainment channels, said: "Idols is a brand that we believe in and is a brand that connects us to our youth in the country. It promotes nationalism and healthy competition while it gives young people a stage to showcase their talent."

Even though many other contestants did not lift the title, their journey on the show opened many doors in the industry. Some of the most memorable artists to gain fame from the show over the years include Amanda Black, Shekhinah, Khaya Mthethwa, Loyiso Gijana, and Elvis Blue.
