Where To Study Wildlife Biology In South Africa

A wildlife biologist studies animals and their behavior along with the role each animal plays in its natural habitat. If you have an interest in animals and the outside world, Wildlife Biology might be the career for you.

To become a Wildlife Biologist, you would need at least a Bachelor of Science degree ideally in wildlife biology, wildlife conservation, wildlife management, or a related life sciences degree.

Here is a list of institutions where you can pursue qualifications related to wildlife biology: 

University of the Witswatersand (WITS) 

The University of the Witswatersrand offers a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in the field of Biological Sciences. 

The full-time, three year course would provide you with the appropriate skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed for a range of zoological, botanical, and ecological careers and specializations.

University of Johannesburg (UJ) 

The University of Johannesburg offers a BSc in Life and Environmental Sciences with the purpose of developing qualified scientists who can identify, evaluate and solve problems associated with life, earth and environmental sciences. 

Students who opt for this three year qualification from UJ, will be able to assume and demonstrate initiative and responsibility in related academic and professional contexts in South Africa as well as the international world. 

University of Pretoria (UP) 

In the University of Pretoria's Department of Entomology and Zoology, modules towards three Bachelor of Science programmes (Ecology, Entomology and Zoology) and two majors (Entomology and Zoology) are offered. 

During the third year of study is when students can begin specializing in a chosen field. 

Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) 

The Department of Conservation and Marine Sciences at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology offers Diplomas in Nature Conservation and Marine Science which includes either one full year (for Nature Conservation) or six months (for Marine Science) of experiential learning. 

Undergraduate and postgraduate qualifications are also offered, where students obtain the tools, knowledge and skills to contribute towards the management of biodiversity and the marine environment in a sustainable way. 

University of the Western Cape (UWC) 

A Bachelor of Science degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology is offered at the University of the Western Cape, and takes a minimum of three or four years to complete.

Students can further their studies by pursuing an Honours or a Masters degree in Biodiversity and Conservation Biology.
