The Bachelor's of Law (LLB) provides students with sound law knowledge of the general principles of the South African legal system, and an ability to use legal materials effectively.
The LLB degree is very common and is offered by most South African universities. The programme is a minimum of 4 years but could be reduced to 2 years if you have prior academic qualifications in law.
So where can you study the LLB part-time in South Africa?
University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN)
UKZN is the only tertiary institution that offers a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree part-time in South Africa.
The LLB degree is offered on a part-time basis by the School of Law, via the Centre for Extended Legal Studies (CELS), on their Howard College and Pietermaritzburg campuses and provides a flexible option for individuals who are not able to attend lectures during working hours.
The programme is delivered through online learning using the universities e-learning portal and applications such as zoom. The duration of the programme is 12 semesters and runs over 6 years.
The Admission Criteria:
- If the applicant’s highest qualification is an NSC-Degree (i.e. Matric), we will require:
- A minimum APS of 32, excluding Life Orientation;
- English (Home Language) at Level 5, or English (First Additional Language) at Level 6;
- Maths at Level 3 or Mathematical Literacy at Level 5;
- Endorsement or University Exemption on the applicant’s Matriculation Certificate.
- If you have one or more recognised tertiary qualifications, your application will be evaluated primarily on the basis of this/these qualifications, taking account of their nature, level and other relevant factors.
- Relevant working experience may also be considered in appropriate cases.
