The tourism industry is demanding and to thrive in it, you need to have good interpersonal and communication skills, a dedication to quality and good service.
Some have the natural flair for this, however, studying towards a qualification will help further sharpen the skills that you have and add skills that you never had before.
To study for a qualification in tourism at a University of technology, you need to meet the institution's minimum entry requirements.
You are required to have at least level 4 for English (home language or first additional language), level 3 for Mathematics or level 4 for Mathematical Literacy, including Business Economics, Geography and Travel and Tourism as subjects that you have done in your matric year.
On top of this, the prospective students will be evaluated whether they do meet the Admission Point Score (APS) of at least 20.
If you have worked in the industry, you may also want to explore the Recognition Prior Learning route as age and experience may allow you entry into the programme, but this also depends on whether the institution has this route for your chosen programme.
Alternatively, you may opt for the National Certificates N4-N6 in Tourism, should you not get placement at the University of Technology.
If you don’t have matric, not all hope is lost as you may apply for the National Certificate (Vocational) Tourism course, which requires you to have a minimum of Grade 9 and have passed English as part of your school subjects.
Should you be in the position of a Tourism Studies or related qualification, then you are able to gain entry to both the tourism and hospitality industries.
