The National Benchmark Test (NBT) is an examination which is set up by the National Benchmark Test Project. It is a set of tests which are used to assess a learner's academic literacy, general knowledge, and mathematical skill in order to measure academic readiness for university.

Students are required to complete the compulsory NBT simulation test in the week before the NBT test day.

The NBT simulation test allows students who are going to write the NBTs to complete the ID verification process and become familiar with the online test environment.

Students will receive a communication with the specific date that this simulation test must be completed.

You will need to have with you a valid ID or passport that you used when you registered to write the NBT.

Those without South African IDs, foreign passports or need to use their birth certificates for ID verification will need an affidavit from the police including a recent ID photograph that confirms their identity.

Students will go through the login processes and software downloads to avoid unexpected issues on the test day and ensure a smoother test day experience.

The simulation test should take 15 minutes to complete.

Should students need help, online support will be available between 8am and 4pm on week days.

The helpdesk can be contacted via email on nbt@uct.ac.za or via phone call on 021 650 3523 or students can make use of the online chat function while logged into the test platform.

All students registered for NBTs must complete the simulation test as failure to do so will mean that they will not be able to write the NBTs on test day.
