We have now reached the month of December and before we all get into the festive season and take a break, we need to make sure we are prepared for 2023. Have you applied to study yet?

If the answer is no, you will be relieved to know that there are still universities open for 2023 applications.

One of these universities is the University of Pretoria (UP) in Gauteng. UP has no set closing date for applications for non-selection programmes for 2023 and it's instead based on available space. However, the university closed all applications for selection programmes on 30 June 2022.

UP is one of Africa’s top universities and the largest contact university in South Africa. They produce socially impactful research to find solutions for the world’s most pressing issues.

Another University that's still taking applications for the 2023 academic year is the University of the Free State (UFS) as UFS will be closing their 2023 applications on 15 January. Prospective students are however encouraged to apply as soon as they can to ensure that they secure their space before space runs out int heir desired programme.

The University Of South Africa (Unisa) has reopened applications for admission for the 2023 academic year, exclusive to selected qualifications. These applications are open for both first-time students and returning students.

Applications for admissions to undergraduate qualifications, honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas for the 2023 academic year for selected qualifications have reopened until 7 December 2022.

Late Applications & CACH

Some universities, after closing their applications, might find that they have space open in some of their course offerings. This would then lead them to announce late applications.

CACH is also another great option as they approach universities and TVET colleges to provide available spaces where possible. Those who sign up will be required to provide details, which include their chosen study programme, as well as accept and reject offers on the CACH system.

CACH typically opens at the beginning of the year.

Keep an eye on Careers Portal for the latest on late applications and CACH.

Alternative Study Options

If the university you were thinking of attending or which was in your province is no longer taking applications, this does not mean that you have to give up. You still have other study options.

South Africa is home to excellent education institutions such as TVET Colleges, private colleges and private higher education institutions.

Some private institutions offer qualifications which are equivalent to a University degree and will open up the same career paths a degree would have. Take a look at our where to study section to navigate the options available to you.

Paying Your University Fees

Funding and your studies go hand in hand. Fortunately, the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (Nsfas) has officially opened 2023 applications for both the Nsfas bursary and the Funza Lushaka bursary.
