On UCT's Centre for Innovation and Learning's website, they introduce Massive Open Online Courses which launched in 2015 by saying, "UCT offers a number of Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These are free online courses with no entry requirements and are not for university credit. You can choose to purchase a certificate, and in some cases financial aid is available."
They are designed for mass participation and assume that learners will drive their own education, studying alongside diverse fellow students who may come from anywhere in the world.
UCT has now found, since the beginning of March which marked the coronavirus dominating South Africa, that more people are participating in these MOOCs. Enrollments have increased by approximately 35,000 more participants.
UCT has stated, "Centre for Innovation in Learning and Teaching has received such good feedback from people who are keen to learn while under lockdown. Independent learning has also become very popular for those not able to study or those wanting to further develop their skills during economic uncertainty.”
These MOOCs do not only offer free online courses but also has online forums where peers can discuss with each other, video and audio lectures, course material as well as content that can be downloaded and accessed at any time. All videos contain text transcripts to increase accessibility.
UCT has created 23 MOOCs and these are hosted on international platforms. However, because of those very international platforms, good connectivity and data are required for access to these online courses.
