If you’ve been thinking about studying at the University of South Africa (UNISA) next year, time is running out. The university has confirmed that the application window for the 2026 academic year will close on 10 October 2025. This means there are only a few days left to submit your application and secure your place.

Here’s everything you need to know about the closing date, the qualifications still open, and how to make sure your application is successful.

Which Qualifications Are Still Open for Applications?

UNISA is currently accepting applications for the following qualifications:

  • Undergraduate qualifications, including degrees, diplomas and higher certificates
  • Honours degrees and postgraduate diplomas

Applications for master’s and doctoral qualifications have a different closing date, with that window running from 2 September to 21 November 2025.

What You Need to Know About the 10 October Deadline

The 10 October deadline applies to most undergraduate, honours and postgraduate diploma qualifications. Once this date passes, the system will close and no new applications or documents will be accepted.

Applicants are allowed to apply for up to three different qualifications during this period. If you have previously applied but didn’t complete your application or payment, you’ll need to reapply before the closing date.

Do You Qualify? Admission Requirements at a Glance

Before you apply, make sure you meet the general and programme-specific requirements. You’ll need to have a valid school-leaving qualification, meet the minimum Admission Points Score (APS) for your chosen programme, and ensure all your information is up to date.

Applicants also need a valid email address and phone number, as all communication from UNISA is sent electronically. Current UNISA students who want to change their qualification or specialisation can only do so during an open application period.

How to Apply: Step-by-Step

To submit your UNISA application, follow these simple steps:

  1. Visit the UNISA application portal and select your qualification level.
  2. Complete the online application form with your personal and academic information.
  3. Upload your certified supporting documents, including ID and academic records.
  4. Pay the non-refundable application fee of R150 if you are a first-time applicant.
  5. Submit your completed application before 10 October 2025.

Once submitted, UNISA will review your application. You can expect feedback within four to six weeks after the closing date.

Tips to Boost Your Chances of Acceptance

  • Make sure all your documents are clear and correctly certified.
  • Apply early to avoid last-minute technical problems or delays.
  • Use all three qualification options wisely to increase your chances of admission.
  • Double-check your contact information to ensure you receive updates.
  • If you receive an offer, accept it within 10 working days — otherwise, it may be withdrawn.

What to Do If You Miss the Deadline

If you miss the 10 October deadline, you’ll need to wait for the next application period. UNISA may accept late applications next year in January but this is not guaranteed. Some programmes open again for a second-semester intake, so keep an eye on announcements next year.
