There are hundreds of different options to choose from when it comes to colleges. There are TVET Colleges which are government owned and all accredited to offer courses and qualifications.

There are also about 300 private colleges that are registered and accredited with the government. As long as a private college is accredited and registered, there is no reason why you shouldn't study there if they offer a course that you are interested in.

Private Colleges in South Africa

Private colleges in South Africa are registered institutions that offer post-school education and training.

Unlike public universities and TVET colleges, private colleges are independently funded and operated, but they must be registered with the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and their qualifications accredited by Umalusi or the Council on Higher Education (CHE).

They can be suitable for students looking for:

  •     Smaller class sizes
  •     Career-focused or industry-specific qualifications
  •     Flexible learning options (including online and part-time study)
  •     Shorter or more specialised courses

Types of Programmes Offered at Private Colleges

Private colleges offer a range of qualifications, including:

  •     Higher Certificates
  •     National Diplomas
  •     Degrees (in some cases)
  •     Occupational Qualifications
  •     Professional short courses

Fields of study often include:

  •     Business and Management
  •     Information Technology
  •     Health Sciences
  •     Education and Teaching
  •     Creative Arts and Design
  •     Engineering and Technical Trades
  •     Hospitality and Tourism
  •     Media and Communication

Benefits of Studying at a Private College

  •     More personalised attention due to smaller classes
  •     Often faster application and registration processes
  •     Strong links to industry and work-readiness support
  •     Flexible study options, including evening, weekend, and online classes
  •     Focused, career-oriented training

Important Considerations

Before enrolling:

  •     Ensure the college is registered with DHET
  •     Check that qualifications are accredited by the CHE, Umalusi, or QCTO
  •     Compare tuition fees and financial aid or payment plan options. Remember that NSFAS cannot be used at private colleges.
  •     Research graduate employment outcomes or industry connections

NSFAS will pay for qualifying students to study at public TVET Colleges. They do not pay for students to study at private colleges but there are other options for covering the costs of private colleges, including bank loans, bursaries, and other funders.

Why is this important to know?

Space at college always fills up quickly so you need to have a plan. So make sure that you know all about the courses you want to study and the requirements that you need in order to study those courses.
