Does the idea of spending your day analysing information and designing solutions excite you? A career in engineering can be challenging but also extremely rewarding. Find out what you need to enter the engineering profession and what to expect once you get there.

Are you considering a career in engineering? It is a widely known fact that South Africa is suffering from a severe shortage of engineering skills.

The engineering sector offers many career paths for prospective students which include; civil, chemical, mechanical, software and geological engineering to name a few.

Even though these fields are so vastly different engineering often forms the structural basis for other sectors.

Some of the skills required to work as an engineering professional include analysis, calculation, critical thinking, design and innovation. For this reason maths and science education is integral to the engineering sector.

One of the challenges of being an engineer is a varying work schedule. Engineers generally work on projects rather than a set of daily tasks which demands greater levels of flexibility and can mean working long hours to meet deadlines.

While innovation and creative thinking is part of the role, engineers also have to write many reports which can become tedious and time-consuming.

On the other hand a major benefit of engineering is financial security. At a time when engineers are in short supply you are more likely to find employment and earn a good salary for your skills.

Engineers also experience job satisfaction as their work stimulates intellectual development and they find purpose in contributing to the development of society.

What do you think?
Would a career in engineering suit you?
