Being a firefighter may seem exciting and thrilling, but it is also extremely dangerous. If you feel that are the kind of person to run into a burning building or to save a person from a car leaking fuel that may go up at any second, then you're probably making the right decision.
It is a firefighter's job to protect people and properties from fire. It is also their responsibility to assist in the event of disasters such as floods, earthquakes, vehicle accidents, and train derailments.
The job requires lots of physical activity which is why you need to ensure that you are fit.
The requirements for every fire department in South Africa may differ, however, the basic entry-level requirements are:
- Matric
- 18 years or older
- Matric (Mathematics and Physical Science an advantage)
- Physically and mentally fit (evaluations will be conducted)
- Must not be claustrophobic (have a fear of enclosed spaces)
- Must not be acrophobic (have a fear of heights)
- High level of discipline
- Ability to work in a team
- Ability to manage traumatic and stressful situations
- Effective communication skills
- Driving licence -Code 10 with PrDP.
- Pass a physical test.
When you are called for an interview, be sure to enquire about the physical test and anything else that you are unclear about.
Approach the local fire department in your area for information about how to apply.
You can also enter the world of fire fighting through a learnership programme. These are often conducted by Cape Town Fire and Rescue Services, and they will advertise the programmes as applications open.
