It is important to have the correct college degree before you enter the workforce.

A mismatch between your career choice and college degree can lead to a miserable career, years of wasted time and thousands of rands essentially wasted.

As a student, you might've bought into the glorification of college degrees. You might think that all careers are created equal and in theory yes, they are. But just because something pays well doesn't mean that it's your cup of tea.

A college degree is supposed to be a solid foundation on which to build your future career and life. But what if you still find that your passion cannot be turned into an income? One key question you should ask yourself when considering what college to attend is whether the degree and career choice you have in mind align with each other.

Avoid such a scenario by doing the following:

  1. Evaluate where you are today
  2. Learn where you need to be in 10 years
  3. Align your current degree with your future career and where you see yourself in the future

The reason so many people struggle in their careers is because their interests and skill set don't match what they chose to study in college or university.

If your career of choice is in the he field of engineering, then be sure to go for degrees like civil, mechanical and electrical which is associated with it.

When people go to college, they hope to find employment (and happiness!) in their desired field after graduation. It's not just about increasing your earning potential or learning about a new environment - it's about advancing yourself professionally.
