ISFAP is a bursary scheme which targets the missing middle in universities. Keep reading to find out which courses and universities this bursary funds.

ISFAP refers to the Ikusasa Student Financial Aid Programme, which is a bursary which provides a support and funding model for financially needy students who fall under the "poor" and "missing middle" category of students.

The missing middle category describes students that are considered too rich to qualify for funding from the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) but too poor to afford to pay for their fees themself.

Usually a missing middle student's household income will fall between R350 000 and R600 000.

ISFAP provides funding for certain universities and the courses the bursary covers differs for each institution.

Courses Funded by ISFAP

Some universities in South Africa offer the courses with the same outcome, however, the name of the programme may be different depending on the institution. ISFAP has provided a list of courses it funds at its partner universities.

If you know which institution you plan to study at, you can check if your academic programme is funded by ISFAP.

How ISFAP Chooses Which Courses To Cover

In an interview with Careers Portal, Sifanele Biyale, from ISFAP said:

So the topic of courses compared to institutions is different because courses are dynamic, they're gonna change because if we're gonna focus on the occupations in high demand, and seen what AI, data science and data analysis, how popular it has become. So that change is inevitable.

ISFAP has added data science and data analysis courses in response to developments in artificial intelligence with Biyale saying, "courses are going to change, they do change every year".

Not only does ISFAP pay attention to  we are driven by funding requirements, they also have to look at funding requirements.

ISFAP states that it will continue to add courses and Universities to this list granted they align to the skills most needed by the country under "Occupations of High Demand" as defined by the Department of Higher Education.

The ISFAP bursary will cover your tuition fees, accommodation fees, food, learning materials, living allowance and you will also receuve non-academic support.
