In efforts to increase the number of qualified teachers in the country, the Department offers bursaries to prospective teachers with the Funza Lushaka Bursary. You might wonder whether this bursary will cover online learning programmes. We have the answer.

When asked if distance learning students are eligible to get funding through this bursary, the answer is yes, provided that they are eligible in all other respects.

Who Qualifies For The Funza Lushaka Bursary?

In order to be eligible for the Funza Lushaka Bursary, the following is required:

  • You must currently be in grade 12 wanting to do a Bachelor of Education (BEd), a graduate who wants to get a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE)
  • You must be a South African citizen
  • The bursary will only be awarded if two of the priority area subjects are included as a specialisation in the teaching qualification
  • Demonstrate good academic ability
  • Must be 30 years of age or below

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi-year programme that promotes teaching in public schools. The bursaries are provided so that eligible students may complete a teaching qualification in an area recognised as priority.
