The University of South Africa (Unisa) has now commenced with the October/November 2024 examinations.
Unisa uses an Open Distance e-Learning (ODeL) approach to education. This means that students study from home and don’t attend any in-person classes. In recent years, the institution has also begun conducting its examinations online.
It has now been three weeks since the start of the official examination period. We hope your preparations are progressing well, and for those who have completed their October/November 2024 exams, we wish you successful outcomes.
Unisa continued to say that there are "concerning issues" they have now observed. These issues include; non-adherence to examination rules, unethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the use of offensive language.
Non-adherence to examination rules
Students are urged to familiarize themselves with the examination rules outlined in their admission letters and on module sites. Students who don't comply with these rules could suffer serious consequences, including not having their scripts marked or having their marks withheld.
Unethical use of Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Unisa also revealed that students have been using artificial intelligence (AI) during their exams, saying:
Our detective measures have indicated increased unethical use of AI tools in responding to examination question papers.
'Although AI tools serve as powerful learning aids, misusing it - such as submitting AI-generated content without proper acknowledgment or permission -amounts to plagiarism and diminishes the value of your work," said the university.
Submissions which are found to be using AI unethically will result in a 0% score. In severe cases, disciplinary action may be taken.
Use of offensive language
Unisa has also seen an increase in the use of offensive language and aggressive behavior from students who have not adhered to examination rules. Students are reminded that the use of offensive or aggressive language is unacceptable and may result in disciplinary action according to the Student Disciplinary Code.
In light of these concerns, we urge all students to reflect on their actions and maintain a high standard of professional conduct. While we are dedicated to supporting and guiding you throughout your studies, we all must uphold the values of integrity and respect that define to our institution.
Exam Timetable
Unisa posts exam timetables to all students participating in the end-of-year exams. However, students can still access the exam timetable online.
Students who have not received their timetable are encouraged to contact the Unisa examination office. They can send an email to the Examination Administration Division at examinations@unisa.ac.za with their student number.
