Nyari Samushonga, CEO of WeThinkCode_, sat down with Careers Portal to debunk some coding myths and now we're sharing them with our readers.

WeThinkCode_ is a software development academy which recruits South African youth, between 17 and 35 years of age, to get to learn how to code.

First and foremost, maybe the most important myth to debunk, Samushonga says:

Well, the first one is that it's a man's job obviously and it's a global pandemic. I think 20% of people in technical jobs and software are women and yet, when you look at our campus, the women outperform the guys.

WeThinkCode_ has been working very hard to increase the percentage of women in their cohort, aiming for at least 40% this year.

Who's to blame for this misconception? Environment. Family, friends and teachers are often telling women that coding is not for them which Samushonga rejecting this and saying, "there are a lot of girls in coding and we're cool too".

Another misconception is "you'll be relegated to some basement and they'll feed you through a tube and you'll never get out" which is obviously not true. Coding offers a wide variety of things to do such as front end development, gaming and stricter professions in other industries.

The sky is really the limit.

The other misconception is that you need to be mathematically minded to do coding and go into software development or you'll struggle.

It was actually found that people who are strong in languages also do well with software development as Samushonga explains:

There's a high correlation because linguistics is similarly about constructing sentences in a particular way to communicate a particular thing and coding is about telling a computer what to do in a particular language.

These types of misconceptions are often what keeps people from going into coding, which shouldn't be the case.
