The Gauteng Department of Health (GDoH) is inviting applications from qualified candidates to complete their Pharmacy Internship Programme for 2026. This internship provides aspiring pharmacists with practical training within public healthcare facilities across Gauteng.
About the Pharmacy Internship Programme
The Department offers 12-month pharmacy internship placements at registered hospitals and district pharmacies across the province. The programme follows the official guidelines and structure of the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) and aims to equip interns with hands-on experience in public healthcare settings.
The Gauteng Department of Health is an affirmative action employer and is committed to promoting equity and excellence in service delivery.
How To Apply
Candidates interested in completing their internship with the Gauteng Department of Health must submit the following documents:
- Curriculum Vitae (CV): A detailed CV (maximum four pages) outlining your qualifications, experience, and skills.
- Certified Copies of ID and Matric Certificate: Must be certified within the past three months.
- Academic Record: Certified copies of your latest academic transcripts, up to your 3rd year of study or later.
- Testimonial Letter: A testimonial from a university lecturer.
- Hospital Preferences: Select three healthcare institutions for your internship placement, one from each of the following categories:
- 1 Central / Tertiary / Specialised Hospital
- 1 Regional Hospital
- 1 District Hospital
- Motivation Letter: Explain your interest in public sector pharmacy and your chosen hospital preferences.
Note: Applicants must choose one hospital from each category listed in the official placement list provided by the department.
About Pharmaceutical Services in Gauteng
Gauteng’s healthcare facilities are structured into Central, Tertiary, Regional, District and Specialised Hospitals, as well as District Pharmacies that manage primary healthcare services. Pharmacists in these settings are responsible for maintaining medicine stock levels, ensuring proper storage and distribution, and supporting patient care through clinical services and medication management.
Key Responsibilities of Pharmacy Interns
- In-Patient Pharmacy: Dispensing medication to patients in hospital wards, maintaining ward stock, and assisting specialist areas.
- Out-Patient Pharmacy: Dispensing prescriptions to outpatients, providing medication counselling, and ensuring safe use of medicine.
- Bulk Compounding and Prepacking: Preparing extemporaneous mixtures, disinfectants, and pre-packing medicine into ready-to-use packs.
- Patient Care: Participating in ward rounds and collaborating with medical and nursing staff on medication-related matters.
