If you are a law graduate looking to kickstart your career, exciting legal internship opportunities are now available in Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.

The Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal Divisions of the High Court, in partnership with the Democratic Governance and Rights Unit (DGRU) at the University of Cape Town (UCT), are offering a ten-month internship programme for young legal graduates in 2025.
Successful applicants will be employed by UCT on a fixed-term contract and will be seconded to one of the following courts:
- Johannesburg High Court
- Pretoria High Court
- Durban High Court
- Pietermaritzburg High Court
Interns will be required to work in person at the court they are placed at for the full duration of the internship.
A total of 15 internship positions are available: 10 placements in Gauteng and 5 placements in KwaZulu-Natal.
Internship Requirements
To apply for this prestigious legal internship programme, you must meet the following requirements:
- Hold an LLB degree or a recognised four-year legal qualification accredited by SAQA.
- Be familiar with electronic legal research tools such as Westlaw, LexisNexis, Jutastat, and Sabinet, as well as traditional law library resources.
Skills and Competencies Needed
Applicants must demonstrate:
- Strong legal research and analytical skills.
- Excellent report writing and editing abilities.
- Good verbal and written communication skills.
- Problem-solving, decision-making, and planning capabilities.
- Effective time management and the ability to work under pressure.
- Creativity, analytical thinking, and teamwork skills.
Internship Duties
As a legal research intern, your key responsibilities will include:
- Conducting legal research to assist Judges in preparing judgments.
- Retrieving legal materials from various electronic and print resources.
- Attending court proceedings when requested.
- Preparing memorandums, proofreading documents, and assisting with the drafting of legal articles, conference papers, and speeches.
- Managing multiple tasks efficiently to meet tight deadlines while maintaining high-quality work.
Remuneration
Interns will receive a monthly stipend of R9,000.

Important: Preference will be given to candidates who are already based in Gauteng (for Johannesburg and Pretoria placements) and KwaZulu-Natal (for Durban and Pietermaritzburg placements).
